Sheridan U. Nunn

Sheridan U. NunnSheridan Ulysses Nunn began his Scouting career on Chicago’s Westside with Boy Scout Troop 383. For his exemplary Scout spirit, he was inducted into Ordeal Membership in August 1929 at Owasippe Scout Camp. Sheridan returned to Scouting in the Pathfinder District of Chicago Council after his service in the United States Army from 1942-1945. He sealed his membership in the Order with the Brotherhood Honor on 09/20/1947.

During his tenure in Pathfinder District and Cahokia Chapter, Sheridan served in various roles, including as a Scoutmaster for over 10 years and as the District Commissioner for three years. He was active as an Arrowman, holding the post of Chapter Adviser for five years, before becoming an Associate Lodge Adviser under Richard J. Sanders, Sr. For his activities in Owasippe Lodge #7 he was recognized with the Vigil Honor on 08/15/1960 with the name of “Schachachgelendam” – To Be Determined.

Eager to rise to the challenge of leadership in service, Sheridan was appointed by the Council to become the Scoutmaster of the Boy Scout Service Corps for the 1965 World’s Fair in New York. He accepted the invitation of the Scout Executive to become the Owasippe Lodge Adviser in 1968, serving for 11 years until 1979. During that time period he attended four National O/A Conferences and was recognized by the Order with the Distinguished Service Award in 1979 at Fort Collins, CO. Never one to rest on his laurels, Sheridan was appointed as the East Central Region – Section IIIA Adviser, a post he held for four years. Sheridan received one of the Lodge’s first Founders’ Awards and worked on camp staff at Owasippe, an opportunity that had escaped him as a youth.

In the final years of his long life of cheerful service, Sheridan was the Curator of the E. Urner Goodman Museum at Owasippe Scout Camp. He took great relish in being a first-hand witness to the growth of the Scouting movement and sharing his enthusiasm for Scouting with those who appreciated the living history celebrated by the Museum’s exhibits.

Sheridan is remembered as a consummate gentleman and diplomat, a kindly mentor who took genuine interest in developing the youth leaders of our Lodge into the future leaders of our Council and society. Sheridan U. Nunn, a worthy Centurion of Owasippe Lodge #7 whose presence is still felt today.
