Robert C. Landmichl

Bob Landmichl 3 x 5Bob Landmichl has an indefatigable cheerfulness in his spirit of service to Scouting. Inducted into the Arrow in July 1978 while a member of Troop 678 in Chicago Area Council’s Iroquois District, he immediately took an active role in the Tionontali Chapter by serving as the Vice-Chief of Camp Promotions and Unit Elections for two terms. After sealing him membership in the Order with the Brotherhood Honor in October 1979, his palpably contagious enthusiasm led the leadership of Owasippe Lodge to recruit him to run for the office of Lodge Vice-Chief of Camp Promotions, a post in which he served with distinction in 1980. His steadfast devotion to Owasippe Scout Camp and the Order of the Arrow program prevailed during his election to the post of Chief of Owasippe Lodge #7 in 1981. His tenure as Lodge Chief was marked by unprecedented growth in camp attendance and the scope of Lodge activities. Bob served as the youth Chair of the 1982 Section Conclave and was recognized later that year by his peers with the Vigil Honor on May 29, 1982, henceforth being known as “Wewingtonheet” or He Who Likes to Talk.

After his youth service Bob led the youth leadership of the Lodge to devise, plan, and conduct the “Tour de Loop” – an Order of the Arrow project that was a day-long bicycle tour for Scouts of the downtown area of Chicago. Wildly successful with over 3200 participants in its inaugural year in 1997, this event was repeated in 1999 and 2001 with an equally enthusiastic reception. Bob took an adult leadership role as the Owasippe Lodge Adviser from 1989 to 1994, and ironically served as the Adult Adviser to the Section Conclave in 1992, just 10 years after he had been its youth chair.

Recognizing the youth leadership training opportunities at NOAC, he served as the adult contingent leader for three consecutive events. Bob also saw the need for a cadre of dedicated youth and adults who would quietly, but effectively, attend to the less-than-glamorous details that keep our Scouts coming back to Owasippe Scout Camp year after year. For the past 20 years Bob has spent countless weekends at camp with groups large and small, accomplishing those irksome tasks that most people take for granted. Anything from stripping and salvaging scrap metal from rowboats, to posting signage around camp, to mending tents and building floor boards in the maintenance building during the bitter cold of the Michigan winter, Bob continues to steadfastly lead the way for youth and adults Arrowmen.

A lifetime commitment to Scout camping in “Making Owasippe Better” has exemplified Bob Landmichl’s passion for the promotion of Scout camping in our Council and beyond. We of Owasippe Lodge #7 are proud to recognize him as one of our Order of the Arrow Centurions.
